#MadebySFU Rules and Eligibility

Interested individuals/teams should read through the rules and eligibility requirements in detail before applying to #MadeBySFU.

You must complete the #MadeBySFU application by Sep 25, 2022, at 11:59 PM. Late entries will not be considered for the competition.

ELIGIBILITY

Individuals and teams applying to the #MadeBySFU product competition must meet all of the following criteria including both eligibility and product criteria in order to compete. You may still be eligible to participate in the marketplace as a vendor if you do not meet the following criteria. Vendors are welcome to sell their products in the marketplace, however, they cannot compete for any prizes.

*Note: if you’re not eligible to compete as a competitor after applications are reviewed you can still participate as a vendor if you have the required SFU affiliation. 

  • • You are or a team member is a current SFU student, staff, faculty member, or alumni (graduated between 2012-2022) with at least 25% ownership of the business.
  • • The business must have annual revenues below $50,000. 
  • • The applicant must ensure at least one team member is available to represent the company and showcase product(s) at the marketplace on October 13, 2022.
  • • The applicant is responsible for ensuring their product abides by any and all applicable regulatory or certification requirements and is suitable to be sold in British Columbia.
  • • The applicant must guarantee the originality of their submissions and are responsible for ensuring their product does not infringe any existing copyrights or patents.
  • • If deemed a winner of the competition, you will be able to deliver finished products to SFU Spirit Shop within six weeks of receiving your purchase order from the Spirit Shop. 

Competitor vs Vendor 

  • Competitor: Entrepreneur representing a company with a product or service with the intention to compete for cash and in-kind prizes as offered within #MadeBySFU. Previous #MadeBySFU winners, provided they still meet eligibility requirements, are able to enter and compete again. They will be restricted from competing for prizes they have not won in previous years. Category Prize and Top Venture Prize winners of the Coast Capital Venture Prize are not eligible to compete but can participate as a vendor.
  • • Vendor: If you have won a category prize in the Coast Capital Venture Prize venture competition, you can still showcase at the marketplace by applying as a vendor. You will not be eligible for cash prizes and/or purchase orders but will benefit from promotion and sales opportunities. 

PRODUCT CRITERIA

  • • It must be a tangible product (service-based applications are not accepted at this time).
  • • Product ideas and prototypes are allowable.
  • • Food products will only be accepted if deemed as “snack items”. Meaning they have a long shelf life and are properly packaged for resale. 
  • • The product must not already be sold in the SFU Spirit Shop.
  • • Must be original or adapted products*; resellers not accepted. (*not just adding a brand or sticker)
  • • Prototypes are accepted, but the applicant must guarantee the ability to deliver min. $350 (wholesale cost) of the final product to the Spirit Shop within six weeks after receiving a purchase order.
  • • Retail Price: $3-$100 (refer to our pricing blog post or sign up for our workshop for more information on how to appropriately price your product, e.g. wholesale price vs. retail price)
  • • If you are selling body, cosmetic products, or food products they must be following the Cosmetic Regulations, the Food and Drugs Act, and meet any Food Safe requirement. 

Product ideas include (but are not limited to):

  • • Jewelry
  • • Innovative designs for traditional items (e.g. reversible umbrella)
  • • Bags
  • • Handmade notebooks
  • • Clothing and gifts made from sustainable materials
